Rev. Frank Leslie Bersch, Jr.

Jerry lived three doors down the street when we were growing up, along with his younger brothers, Michael, Steve and Kip. His parents owned a deli downtown, and we were in the same homeroom class all the way through Westhampton and TJ. He was a good friend, and we played together, visited each others homes at birthdays, Christmas and Hanakah; along with drag racing in our teens. I remember when we went to DC in the 5th Grade, and we were in the halls of Congress, when we saw VP Nixon talking with Senator LBJ right in front of us! Jerry snapped a picture impulsively, and a guard quickly approached, requiring the film from the whole trip; which was a big disappointment for all of us, but Jerry shrugged it off, helping us to forget about it quickly! I also remember helping him put in a 4-speed transmission with a Hurst shifter in his ' 61 Chevy State Pollice car; and we raced it at Emporia Drag Strip, with Jerry letting several of us have the thrill of driving it over 100 mph in the 1/4 mile! WOW! We only saw each other on one of my three leave times in the four years of the Navy, while he was at UVA during the same period. In 1972, when I started VCU, I remember the shock of his passing, along with many others of us crying at the funeral. He is forever in our hearts, and will always be missed!
